Social Security payments for April 2025 start this week. See the full schedule, who qualifies for extra payments, and how recent SSA changes may affect you.
More than 69 million Americans are set to receive their Social Security payments this month. Whether you’re a retiree, receiving disability benefits, or part of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, knowing when to expect your April payment is key to budgeting and planning.
Here’s the full breakdown of the Social Security April 2025 payment schedule, including key updates from the Social Security Administration (SSA) that could affect some beneficiaries.
April 2025 Social Security Payment Schedule
Your Social Security benefit payment date depends on your birth date — unless you started receiving benefits before May 1997 or get both SSI and Social Security. Here’s when checks will go out:
- April 3 – For those receiving benefits before May 1997 or those who get both Social Security and SSI
- April 9 – Birthdays between the 1st and 10th
- April 16 – Birthdays between the 11th and 20th
- April 23 – Birthdays between the 21st and 31st
Important Tip: If your payment doesn’t arrive on the expected date, the SSA recommends waiting three additional mailing days before contacting them, as most payments are issued electronically.

Surprise SSI Payment in April
Some SSI recipients may also receive an extra payment of up to $1,450 this month. This payment is separate from your regular monthly check and is meant to provide added support for low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Who qualifies?
- You must be 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability
- You must meet strict low-income and asset limits
- You must be enrolled in Direct Deposit
If you recently applied for SSI, your payment may not arrive immediately. It typically takes one to two months after approval to receive the first check.
SSA Delays New Policy Rollout
Originally scheduled to begin April 1, the SSA has delayed the rollout of stricter identity verification rules to April 14 following pushback from advocacy groups and lawmakers.
What’s changing?
- Applicants for retirement, survivors, or auxiliary benefits must verify identity online or in person
- Those applying for SSI, SSDI, or Medicare are exempt from the new in-person verification rule
- People changing direct deposit information must prove their identity
- Exceptions apply in extreme need cases, including terminal illness or prisoner pre-release
