The stock market’s major index was in deep negative territory Tuesday as investors waited to hear from the Federal Reserve.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 269 points, or 0.8%, during midday trading. Out of the 30 “blue chip” stocks in the index, 27 were down.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq had both fallen 0.6%.

Investors widely expect the Fed to hold rates steady on Wednesday but will pay keen attention to comments from Chair Jerome Powell to gauge the path of future interest rates.
