The SSDI is a federal program designed to support those who are unable to work due to a disabling medical condition.
Unlike Supplemental Security Income (SSI), this benefit is not based on financial need, but on work history and Social Security taxes paid over time.
That is, it is like an insurance policy to which workers have contributed and from which they can benefit in the event of having a disability.
To ensure efficient distribution, the Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a staggered payment schedule, as each month the 7.4 million SSDI beneficiaries receive their payments on different Wednesdays, on a schedule that is based on their date of birth.
When is the SSDI payment in May?
The SSA decrees payment according to average lifetime earnings before becoming disabled, in an analysis that does not take into account the severity of the disability.
Payments are distributed on the second, third and fourth Wednesday of each month and the date is determined by the beneficiary’s date of birth, in a staggered organization that allows the SSA to be more efficient and deposits are distributed as follows:
- Second Wednesday of the month: If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th.
- Third Wednesday of the month: If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th.
- Fourth Wednesday of the month: If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st.
That is, for April, if your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th, payment will be made on May 14; if you were born between the 11th and 20th, you will receive your payment on May 21, and if your date of birth is between the 21st and 31st, your payment will arrive on May 28.
In the event of a delay in payment, the SSA recommends waiting three business days.
If your payment has not arrived within this period, please contact your bank to confirm that there is no problem on their side.
